Report: Hackers Targeting ATMs Via Phone, Internet Jacks
ATM maker NCR is warning customers about a new skimming assail aimed at intercepting customer data from cash machines.
Co-ordinate to a report from security researcher Brian Krebs, NCR sent an alert to customers on February. 8 warning that hackers are using external skimming devices to hijack the telephone or Internet jack on ATMs. Skimmers have reportedly been targeting NCR and Diebold brand ATMs using this method.
The skimming devices "are plugged into the ATM network cables and intercept customer card data," NCR reportedly warned. "Additional devices are attached to the ATM to capture the Pivot."
The company said skimmers used a "keyboard overlay" to attack an NCR ATM, and a concealed photographic camera on the Diebold model. "PIN information is so likely transmitted wirelessly to the skimming device," the company said.
The hackers are probable using this method to get around anti-skimming technology, which is typically placed on the ATM card entry bezel, Krebs noted. In its advisory, NCR said cash machine operators demand to be cautious well-nigh this assault method, and avoid having ATM network communication cables exposed in publicly attainable areas.
"If something doesn't expect right about an ATM, don't apply information technology and move on to the side by side one," Krebs recommended.
